I have to strongly caveat this with the fact that all hardware is different. Some people will invariably find certain distros more suited to them than others. This mini-review is just based on my experiences, I'm not a professional, just bored.
So I finally broke away from *buntu, after many, many attempts with Sabayon-Linux. I started back with 3.3 mini, and I loved the pure style of it. too bad it didn't work with my hardware too well. I mean it was decent, but compared to debian, I'm just too stupid to have a non-working gentoo based distro rith out of the box. So every couple of months, I came back, cuz Sabyon was just too sexy, but every time I walked away with swollen nuts, and went back to bed with *buntu.
Now don't get me wrong, *buntu is the only distro that worked with all of my hardware out of the box (minus codecs and 915resolution). And I mean the ONLY one, that means XP and VISTA (despite the pretty little sticker to the contrary). I really liked how *buntu 'just worked' for me. Unfortunately, I'm replulsed by what I'd like to refer to as 'Australian fashon sense' (or South African, or Brittish, or what ever the fuck).
You see *buntu, while a highly pragmatic and easy distro to get your feet wet on, is just plain ugly as piss. The K version is slightly prettier, but its obvious that the enthusiasim that went into the gnome release just wasn't there for KDE.
Now Sabayon on the other hand, my sweet, sweet Sabayon, is just beautiful. Like getting to fuck a European stripper. And now finally, with 3.4F, I think I might just seal the deal and bring this bitch home.
So far, everything works; bluetooth, wifi, printing- 915 is even included by default. And of course, she has big tits, and an ass that tastes like french vanilla icecream. There's even this cool little rotating menu thingie I just love.
The only complaint that I might have, is maybe there is too much software pre-installed (well, I do have a DELL). So, with out further ado, I'll get to it:
Hardware:
DELL XPS M1210
1.83Ghz centrino core2 duo
1G Ram
GMA950 intigrated graphics controller
ipw3945 intelpro wireless card
LiveDVD:
F was somewhat faster than the other's but not enough to make that much of a difference. On my box, its pretty much 'install or die' with this distro, but since I didn't really need to take her for a spin. (bear in mind that I've pretty much installed some version of this distro every other day for like three months)
Install:
Since this is a 'source-based distro, it took like 45 minutes. (*buntu takes no more than 13 on my box). One of the nice things about the installer is that it let's you costumize somewhat: you can either do both KDE and Gnome, or just one (or fluxbox- yuck). You can also opt to include the premium open-source games or not. (Too bad its an all or nothing deal with the games). Installing the games adds about another 45 min. (my hardware), so I opted not too. Besides I only like SauerBraten and Nexuiz.
I also decided to do both KDE and Gnome, because for some reason, a few GTK apps won't work without the big foot installed (I.E. Portato, the graphical application installer).
An additional trouble I had was saving my home partition from Kubuntu and having all of the config files fucked up. It wasn't too painfull though, as I just did a sudo cp /etc/skel/* /home/user/ in terminal, and all was good (I did have to dig my ktorrents folder out of /home/user/.kde/share/apps, since I was downloading three torrents during my reformat)
First Boot:
Pretty quick; I didn't time it, but it was noticably faster than *buntu- One of the reasons I switched. Cool startup music, and all very pretty. It comes with Compiz-fusion by default, including the system tray icon (gutsy does not), which is actually pretty convenient when you need to turn it of for java or whatever. Sabayon used to be touted as 'the official distro of the Beryl Project' by the way, which is what got me interested in the first place. Now I'm rocking and rolling.
Of course, my wireless has to function or its a deal breaker for me; everything else can be broken, but if I ain't got no pipe then I'm dead in the water.
Conclusions:
What can I say? I'm a sucker for the pretty girls. I could of waited for the mini, if I already didn't have a raging hard on. I decided to go for sourcebased, even though its a little tougher than binary, because in the long run, it gives you more options. I will say this; LXNAY should really try and pitch this as a gamer's distro. I'm not all that into games, but that's where the real money is. Free OS with exclusive premium pay games? Fuck Microsoft and their virus ridden asses. By the way, I was watching porn while trying to write this, so if my metaphors offend you, then you should try Ubuntu-Crhistian edition.
